Summary of Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988
The Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 (PCA) is the primary anti-corruption law in India. It was enacted to combat corruption among public servants by defining corruption-related offences, prescribing penalties, and establishing procedures for investigation and prosecution. The Act consolidated earlier anti-corruption laws and was significantly amended in 2018 to strengthen transparency, accountability, and anti-bribery measures.
Objective
The main objectives of the Act are:
• To prevent corruption in public offices and government institutions.
• To punish public servants who misuse their official position for personal gain.
• To prohibit the giving and taking of bribes.
• To promote integrity, transparency, and accountability in public administration.
• To provide an effective legal framework for investigating and prosecuting corruption offences.
