What this Act covers

Summary of the Apprentices Act, 1961

The Apprentices Act, 1961 was enacted to regulate and promote apprenticeship training in industries across India. The Act aims to develop a skilled workforce by providing practical, industry-based training to apprentices under the supervision of employers. It lays down the framework for the engagement of apprentices, the responsibilities of employers and apprentices, and the standards for apprenticeship training. The Act has been amended from time to time, most notably in 2014, to make apprenticeship training more flexible and industry-oriented.

Objective

The main objectives of the Act are:

• To regulate the training of apprentices in designated and optional trades.

• To develop a skilled workforce to meet the needs of industry.

• To bridge the gap between theoretical education and practical training.

• To prescribe the rights, duties, and obligations of employers and apprentices.
