Section 2 of the Employee’s Compensation Act, 1923 deals with definitions. In this Act, unless there is anything repugnant in the subject or context,- (b) "Commissioner" means a Commissioner for Workmen's Compensation appointed under section 20;

(c) "compensation" means compensation as provided for by this Act; 8[(d) "dependant" means any of the following relatives of a deceased 9[employee], namely :- (i) a widow, a minor 10[legitimate or adopted] son, and unmarried 10[legitimate or adopted] daughter, or a widowed mother; and (ii) if wholly dependent on the earnings of the 9[employee] at the time of his death, a son or a daughter who has attained the age of 18 years and who is infirm;

(iii) if wholly or in part dependent on the earnings of the '[employee] at the time of his death, (a) a widower, (b) a parent other than a widowed mother, 1. This Act has been extended to- (1)Goa, Doman and Diu by Reg. 12 of 1962, s. 3 and Sch. (w.e.f. 15-8-1963);

(2) Dadra cud Nagar Haveli by Reg. 6 of 1963, s. 2 and Sch. I;

(3) Pondicherry by Reg. 7 of 1963, s. 3 and Sch. I; and (4) Laccadive, Minicoy and Amindivi Islands by Reg. 8 of 1965, s. 3 and Sch. This Act has been modified in its application to apprentices under the Apprentices Act, 1961 (52 of 1961) by s. 16 and to that Act.
